ACSS/TW (Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported - Tree Wire)
Is a concentrically stranded conductor with one or more layers of trapezoidal shaped hard drawn and annealed 1350-0 aluminum wires on a central core of steel. ACSS/TW can either be designed to have an equal aluminum cross sectional area as that of a standard ACSS which results in a smaller conductor diameter maintaining the same ampacity level but reduced wind loading parameters or with diameter equal to that of a standard ACSS which results in a significantly higher aluminum area, lower conductor resistance and increased current rating.
Key Features of ACSS/TW:
- Construction: ACSS/TW consists of a steel core surrounded by layers of aluminum, similar to ACSS/AW. However, ACSS/TW is designed to be insulated, which allows it to be installed closer to tree branches and other vegetation without the risk of electrical hazards.
- Insulation: The insulation on ACSS/TW conductors provides protection against environmental factors and prevents electrical shorts due to contact with tree branches or other obstacles
- Applications: This type of conductor is commonly used in residential and rural areas where power lines need to run through wooded or overgrown areas. The insulation allows for a more flexible installation without the need for extensive tree trimming.
